Invader | Art Books, Books & Publications
Invader is a French contemporary artist and internationally recognised street artist, famous for his iconic pixelated ceramic mosaics inspired by the 1970s and 1980s video game Space Invaders. Since 1998, he has installed thousands of mosaics in cities around the world, developing a unique artistic project known as the “Invasion”.
His work combines street art, contemporary art, urban culture, video games and public space. Using small ceramic tiles as pixels, Invader creates colourful characters and compositions that interact with the architecture of each city. Paris was the starting point of his project, which later expanded internationally to cities including Los Angeles, London, Rome, Miami, Hong Kong, Tokyo and many others.
Invader art books and Invasion Guides
Books are an essential part of Invader's artistic practice. Since 2003, the artist has published his Invasion Guides, a collection of books documenting the history of his interventions in different cities. Each guide presents photographs, locations, maps and archives related to a specific urban invasion.
Among the most important Invader books are L'Invasion de Paris, Invasion Los Angeles, Invasion in the UK, Invaderoma, Mission Miami, Wipe Out in Hong Kong and New Mosaics of Ravenna. The artist has also published major books and catalogues such as 4000, The Complete Guide to the Space Invaders, 1998–2021 and Prints on Paper, Catalogue Raisonné 2001–2020.
4000, The Complete Guide to the Space Invaders, 1998–2021 is particularly significant within Invader's publishing practice. Published in 2022, the extensive volume documents the artist's worldwide project and provides an important visual archive of his Space Invaders.
Invader's books are more than traditional art publications. They function as archives of his street installations, documenting works that exist in public spaces and can change, disappear or become inaccessible over time. His maps and guides also transform the discovery of street art into a form of urban exploration and collecting.
Invader, Space Invaders and contemporary street art
The connection between Invader and the original Space Invaders video game is central to his artistic identity. His pixel-based mosaics translate the visual language of early video games into physical objects installed directly within the urban environment.
Beyond his ceramic mosaics, Invader has developed a broader contemporary art practice including Rubik's Cube works, prints, sculptures, installations, stickers and limited editions. His Rubikcubism project extends his fascination with pixels, grids and popular culture into three-dimensional artworks.
Invader's practice has established him as one of the most recognisable artists working between street art and contemporary art. His books, maps and catalogues have become important collectible publications for anyone interested in urban art, contemporary photography, street culture and artist publishing.
